Scott Kuhl Warning: I may have no idea what I am talking about!

I am way overdue for a new laptop.  I am currently running a 6 year old Inspiron.  So my question is, what laptop should I buy and from where?

The laptop will be used primarily for development and office work.  No games.  I considered a Tablet PC, but do I really need the extra features?

My budget is the $1000 - $1500 range.  And if possible I would like to find a laptop that I can upgrade to Vista and get the full Aero Glass interface.

If I find something good, I'll make the jump.  Otherwise I'll probably wait until Vista releases.

Any suggestions?

I just got a new dell latitude d610. I really like it. I think base is around $1500. I beefed it up a bit and spent around $2800. It is super light and the battery lasts for 4 hours or so

So, this lady - what, she starts off in, what, a wheelchair? Then she seems to speak in 'brain damaged 'speak'' for a while? I honestly thought - poor woman, she's had a stroke, but, bless her, she's doin' ok.

Then, after a while, she says something like - or maybe it was the 'bald guy' - 'you can do this or that' - 'oh, and then there's the 'custon' setting' ... (the ellipsis means, yeah, nothing like you really wanted - right!) like she knows that we - the users are going to say 'WTF', that's nothing like I want - and then we're back to the same ol' dialog she shows previously to this?!

Now, this is OK - it really is - like, how can a machine read my mind, and then perfect the output that I had in mind!

My 'problem' with this is - that they're selling this without honesty!

Yours, one of the Win 3.0 devs - but have since, yet still a 'fan', 'moved on'
