I just picked up a nice Longhorn Machine for $279. The “Super Computer Sale” is in Kansas City right now, so if you are here and need a spare box, they are cheap. It's kinda funny because last week I was talking to Bill about the machine he was building and told him to wait for a computer sale like the one here. I just ordered a new machine from Dell to put Longhorn on (and for other experiments). It's a PowerEdge 400C with a 2.4Ghz P4 (I think it's HT, but not 100% sure. their site said it was, but I have my doubts at the price I paid), 80GB HD, 128MB RAM (I'll need to bump this up, but not at Dell's memory prices), etc. for around $430 after a $100 rebate.

I considered going the cheap route, and there are plenty of inexpensive machines to be had on pricewatch.com, but decided that in the long run, the time I might have to spend troubleshooting or fixing a no-name machine is worth more than the +/- $100 saved on the machine. At least with Dell, if something doesn't work, I know I can get it fixed fast.

Either way, it's great that getting a new machine is so cheap these days!

I thought about going the same route, but didn't because it was right in front of me. I kinda fine it funny that machines are cheaper than monitors now!
