IBM announced that they are giving 500 of their thousands of patents to the open source community in hopes of spurring innovation which many believe is hindered by the US Patent Office and their patent policies. It is a pretty interesting move and they are hoping that others will follow suit and do the same. Here is a PDF of the patents they are giving away. Here is a story about this release.
