Your Opinion: Should Telecomuters Have Desktops or Laptops?

Monday, June 19, 2006 11:09 AM

I'm lucky that I work for a company that understands the value of having their developers use laptops. The agility, accessibility...its all there, and all good.

But I have a friend (we'll call this friend “The Friend”, or “TF” for short) who is a telecomuter, and has worked for the same company for approx 5 years. When TF comes into town , TF has to lug the desktop tower that was given to her so she can do work in the city. Up until the last few years, that also included a monitor as well, because “The Company” didn't have enough here in the city.

Seriously...that just seems stupid to me. Developers need the right tools for the job, and if there is a chance of travel, why wouldn't you provide them with the right tools for the job at hand...or, at the very least, provide a terminal with all the tools available at the office..but by that time, you'd be better off just buying a laptop.

Mind you, “The Company” still hasn't bought into .NET either, and we're here in 2006. It's a wonder some of these places can actually survive.
