Tangible Thoughts SharePoint, MOSS? and all the other questions

A lot of people in the blogosphere have been pointing to Brian Scott’s Cropper, which I see nothing wrong with.

Cropper is a very nice application Brian has put together in C#, and I am sure most of you will find a real nice use for it. Nice work Brian.

Sometime back I really had the need an application like this, and I was entertaining thoughts of writing something with a similar objective. Brian thanks for saving me a lot of trouble.

Now let me tell you about the idea I had. Sometime back I was putting together a bunch of how-to documents (on SharePoint mind you) for a client, and that involved a great deal of screen shots. My approach at the time was Alt+Print Screen and edit in Fireworks (I needed to put arrows and highlights to those images). Cropper does this to a certain extent, but (yes there always a but, I am hard to please when it comes to software ;) ) I am a clean desktop guy, and I don’t think I like cropper creating a folder on it, so I wish the output location was configurable.

But besides that what I really wanted was for the print screens to be saved to files (at a configurable location), you see I just want a quick way of taking screenshots, and resizing a window to do it a tad bit too much effort when pressing Alt+Print Screen will do quite easily. What I really wanted/want was for a little app to sit in my systray, whenever I pressed print screen or alt Print Screen or the clipboard object was a bitmap for an Msn Messenger style alert window to pop-up showing me a thumbnail of what was captured, the file in the meantime would be saved to a set location, clicking on the thumbnail in the alert window opens the image for preview. The alert window also have a button to delete the image (i.e. discard it by the user). Right clicking on the thumbnail should bring up the windows explorer context menu for it (i.e. shell extensions menu) to perform other functions.

Sounds neat huh? I doubt if I am ever going to get around to doing this. Anyone else is welcome to try. I am just too bogged down with work and I know I am not the only one who finds a need for an app like this.

Until I get such an app, I think I’ll put up with cropper.

In the meantime here is another commercial screen capture utility: http://www.techsmith.com/
