Happy New Year

May all of you have a peaceful & prosperous New Year!! (this post might be early depending on which part of the world you are in)

It might be a quiet new years eve
After December 25th I haven’t heard a single firework explode. Usually in the run up to the dawn of a new year you would very frequently hear people lighting fireworks. This year it’s all so quiet. Certain organizations that had organized events for the new years, have gone as far as providing the option of contributing ones ticket fare to the Relief effort in addition to reimbursing it. I also personally know a lot of individuals who will be heading down South or to the North East this weekend to ......

Nature knows what Nature doees
Today our local papers ran an article saying that in one of our National parks that were hit by the Tsunami not an animal corpse is visible. The article further goes onto say that any animal, not even a hare is insight. Out of nearly 450 elephants that roam the park not one is in sight. I did notice this too. Usually near the beach you do have a bit of aerial wildlife mainly in the form of crows (or ravens or whatever you might call them). The day of the tsunami, in the morning there was not a single ......

Sattelite images: Tsunami hitting the coast of Sri Lanka
Before and After satellite pics from the Quick Bird Sattelite. Please note, the town shown here (Kalutara) is on the west coast, so the ferocity of the waves you see would be much less than that on the East coast which faced the brunt force of the attack ......

Some people are just so evil
For the last couple of days after the tsunami struck, the sea hasn’t been quite back to normal. At infrequent intervals during the past 2 days the sea level will drop and then rise a bit. This is clearly visible by observing the water level against the reef. Yesterday in the town of Moratuwa when the sea level rose a bit a set of ruffians had gone around announcing that another wave was imminent and that the people should vacate immediately, whilst these ruffians were prepared to loot the empty houses. ......

Life is not back to normal (for some it might never be)
Tuesday 28th Dec, 2nd day after the tsunami hit. More than 1 million people in Sri Lanka alone affected, and it’s very hard to get back to normal life. At work your mind just isn’t on work. Every few minutes I keep checking the Reuters site or this list. Rumors that are floating around aren’t helping. For instance several offices closed yesterday in panic because it was rumored that another quake of magnitude 9.2 had struck. Today too there was a call saying that the sea level was rising again. Even ......

SPList.Item[x] != SPListItem.GetItemById(x)
Just wanted to state the obvious. SPList.Item[x] != SPListItem.GetItemById(x) Don’t get confused, with the SPListItem you are able to iterate through each list item via the item Iterator. The Item iterator basically takes an index which is NOT equal to the items ID on the list ......

Something About WebParts
Maurice shares some thoughts on what most probably might be with the next Version of SharePoint. He also mentions vaguely the nuance of developing and deploying WebParts. The fact is SharePoint v Next will built on the next version of I am sure that most of you would agree that WSS is today what it is because of The move up from SPS 2001 or STS to SharePoint 2003 was phenomenal. All that productivity capabilities just opened up with the 2003 versions. I suspect that we can look ......

Students uncover dozens of Unix software flaws
From WinInsider and since we are on the topic of security. "Students of iconoclastic computer scientist Daniel Bernstein have found some 44 security flaws in various Unix applications, according to a list of advisories posted online. The flaws, which range from minor slipups in rarely used applications to more serious vulnerabilities in software that ships with most versions of the Linux operating system, were found as part of Bernstein's graduate-level course at the University of Illinois at Chicago." ......

New IE Exploit spoofs Secure sites
Scoop from Lockergnome Don’t want to jump on anybody’s case, primarily because I am unawares if there was a specific ‘Service Pack2’ for IE or if the article is talking about SP2 with regard to XP SP2. Full article is here But if this is XPSP2 I sure as hell wasn’t expecting to see it, at least not so soon or not so severe. Obviously there’s something very wrong. If XPSP2 was supposed to be an initiative that championed Microsoft’s effort with regard to security this isn’t adding any credibility. ......

Electronic Arts Buys a Piece of Ubisoft
From Lockergnome Electronic Arts Buys Stake in a Rival Game Maker in France Electronic Arts, a maker of video games, said yesterday that it bought 19.9 percent of a French competitor, Ubisoft Entertainment, the maker of games based on Tom Clancy novels. Using the OWSDateField
As a developer wanting to create a WebPart that needs a date picker everybody will tempted to use SharePoint's date picker. Unless you know how to use it you are going to run into a couple of gotchas. Basically everybody initially stumbles, trying to find a way to get it to display. What you should ideally do to use the OWSDateField is OWSForm frm1 = new OWSForm(); OWSDateField df1 = new OWSDateField(); frm1.Controls.Add(df1); If you are creating an ASP.NET form, you would need to have the following ......

Media Player 10 on Windows 2003
At last; a hack that I really appreciate. Neowin has a snippet posting on how to Get Windows Media Player 10 to install on Windows 2003. Link here. Why do I appreciate this hack so much you might ask? Well I work on SharePoint, and I currently cant see it running on Windows XP, or justify having an extra test environment for me to play around with it. Next hack to look forward to is to install MSN desktop search on Win2K3. What I know so far is that the contents of the setup (exe) can be extracted. ......

Driver Upgrades for your ATI
A very nice christmas gift from ATI. They have released a new version of their catalyst drivers. I quote from an article about it up at "Some interesting details emerge in the release notes: # Driver efficiency has improved considerably for both Direct3D and OpenGL. # Numerous D3D games show 2-3% gains at low resolution. The small batch size tests in 3DMark05 show improvements as large as 15% on some products. # In OpenGL, several game titles show improvements in the lower settings. Wolfenstein ......

Something about Skylines
This one is for all you car enthusiasts. I am sure all of you have most definitely have heard of the Nissan Skyline GTR, yes we are talking about the legend here. And some of you also might know or might be freaked out by Nissans plans for the GTR. Or then again you might be mistaken. The latest I have heard is that the next car to wear the "GTR" badge is going to look like this (image below), and it might not be a Skyline at all. Yes, dissapointing isnt it. It looks more like the Infiniti G35 (Skyline ......

NFS Underground 2
I finished Need For Speed Undground 2 today. Its a good game, but somehow I feel the UG2 experience was less exciting than playing Need For Speed Underground 1. Cant exactly place what makes me feel so, maybe its that the game finished much sooner than how long I remembered Underground 1 took, or maybe its that the Story was very very incomplete, or maybe its the lack of movies to add to tha narrative element, or maybe it was that some of the races werent as hard those in Underground 1 (remember ......

Cant go all the way with FrontPage
Recently I have been quite annoyed with FrontPage. Mostly because of it little quirks and bothersome default behavior. Here are a 2 main one that are a real pain to me. DVWP details are cached, so if you change the DVWP properties, its not going to reflect on the TaskPane untill you close the site and reopen. To me this is Irritation no1. The biggest one of them all. Because if you didn’t know the details were caching you’d be totally at loss as to why your changes do not have any effect. Furthermore ......

SharePoint didnt know what it was doing when I wanted a second Portal Created
I had to reinstall SharePoint Portal Server today; today because it seemed like a good day to do it. My SharePoint Portal Server got zapped long time back after IT decided to rename all the machines to some finky naming-convention. Zapped as in the Search went down and never came back. So I was installed SharePoint, configured it, and then created the first portal, everything went OK. Once the Portal was created it normally presents a screen providing you with several options like to visit the site, ......
