Most of the time, I get question from new friends who work in other technologies that "SharePoint is for Content Management/WebSite Creation?". Well, it's common because SharePoint is sucessor of Microsoft Content Management Server (CMS) which dedicatedly used for Web Content Management. SharePoint Portal 2001 predominantly focus on Content Management feature, whereas the later releases came with more features. It's very easy to create Colloboration portal with SharePoint in Minutes where it requires ...
It's a common question very often I've been asked. Well , Microsoft defines "SharePoint is a Business Collaboration Platform for the Enterprise and the Internet". It's a perfect definition or IT Pros (esp. CXOs), but when it comes to Developers it requires more or different definition. SharePoint first released in the year 2001 as SharePoint Portal 2001. Basically It's a portal which has functionalities for intranet website. The features can be used as it is or can be customized minimum level. SharePoint ...
I ran into a real head scratcher this week. While migrating a very public folder dependant organization, I couldn’t access public folders through OWA. I had full public folder functionality in the Outlook client, only OWA was affected. The environment was still in a hybrid state with production Exchange 2003 servers in the organization as well as DR servers which were using a third party replication package. The exact error I was getting looked like this: I had already established all 2010 and 2003 ...
In the past few weeks, I have not been the most prolific blogger. In fact, I have been so busy with work and book writing that it feels like the past few months have been a very concentrated whirlwind of activities. However, the good news is that I will get a welcomed respite very soon, and am very excited to resume blogging on a regular basis. And believe me, I have tons of content on Silverlight, Windows Phone 7 development, Expression Blend, integration, developer-designer workflow, MVVM and other ...
In today’s world, agility and flexibility are two vital assets that every company must have in order to stay on course. Organizations that can adjust to market trends and rise to meet new challenges are the ones that will come out on top. Having the technology to communicate on an ad-hoc basis and meet in real-time collaboration with co-workers and decision-makers allows for many businesses to do just that. However, many companies are still stuck on old communications technologies that cause for ...
As you can see, creating users only takes a minute or two, so creating a handful of accounts during a trial is no big deal. But when the time comes to start bringing dozens or hundreds of accounts over, you’re going to want a more automated approach. In the Users / Overview subtab, you’ll find an “Import users from a file” link under Actions. The file in question must be in CSV format. There’s no need to reinvent the wheel here. Simply download Microsoft’s offered .csv file template or file (or both) ...
I bought an iPad on Labor Day at the Apple Store in Greensboro, NC. I blogged about my stored experiences with some interesting feedback. I'd like to share my experiences with the iPad thus far. Hype Yes, the iPad is hyped. But it is REALLY REALLY COOL! I admit it...I love it. I bought the least expensive version because I anticipated using it only for development. It's linked to Exchange, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Wikipedia, College Football scores, etc., etc. And I find myself using it a lot. ...

Sorry for not posting on a more regular basis, but we were migrating a server for a local police department. Overall it went well except for the an issue between Symantec anti-virus and the main application that the officers use for their ticketing system. One hard lesson we learned was that if SBS 2008 takes an hour to boot up with lots of Exchange errors, it isnt exchange but rather that IPv6 had been uninstalled by accident. Thanks to a Technet article we found, this was resolved with just a few ...
What is BPOS? BPOS is a suite of enterprise-class software that is hosted by Microsoft and delivered as a subscription service. We recently switched over a client’s small infrastructure to Small Business Server 2008. SBS 2008 has SQL 2008 and Exchange 2007 imbedded. The customer wanted to keep the same internal and external FQDN names used previously with Exchange 2003. I had them purchase a SAN certificate with all the standard names in an Exchange 2007 or 2010 environment. We installed the certificate, made sure everything was set in both internal and external DNS, and started setting up clients. Webmail and Active-Sync ...
Long ago, in the mid and late-90s, the mobile device market was a bit different from today’s. Palm led the PDA category, with monochrome devices that operated offline, until the Palm VII and its ultra-slow Internet service came out. The Palm VII was all the rage amongst early-adopters…I even bought the erstwhile publisher of Visual Studio Magazine’s predecessor one and shipped it to him, because they were available in New York, but not in the Bay Area, where he was. Then a Canadian company called ...
Microsoft introduced TCP/IP Auto tuning with Vista and Windows 2008 server. Its also a part of Windows 7 and 2008 R2. This feature resizes IP packets which can improve network performance. Older network devices, however, like Cisco PIX firewalls do not support Auto tuning and can cause connection issues. I had a client that was getting email undeliverable errors from a certain domain while successfully sending to various others. After investigating OBL listings and various other possible culprits, ...
I’ve been syncing my calendars for years. If you’re interested in why I am using Google, then read the history section, otherwise skip down to the how to section of this post. History For past six years or so, I’ve been using Plaxo to synchronize my calendar and contacts between my work computer and my home computer. My work computers have been Windows XP/Vista/7 with Outlook 2003/2007/2010, so I used the Plaxo Outlook Toolbar to sync calendars and contacts. At home, our main family computer has ...

Cloud services platforms are still in their infancy considering the size of the market, but big players like Microsoft, IBM, Amazon, and Google have made significant investments for the future in offering cloud services in some form or the other. In this section, I will outline the offerings of some cloud services providers: Amazon Web Services Amazon is the largest online retailer in the world, and to support its daily operations, Amazon has one of the most advanced data centers in the world.
What is the MSMQ problem that you are most likely to encounter? The dreaded "Insufficient Resources" error. Unless you have a working knowledge of how an operating system actually operates then this error is going to cause mass confusion. For starters, which resources does it mean? Disk space? No, that has GBs free. Memory? No, task manager shows that there is more than enough still unused. So what's up? I've had a look at the MSMQ FAQ for the following list of possibilities (plus one or two others): ...
There is a lot about Microsoft that is new and it will affect the world just the same. With windows 7, Exchange Server 2010, Server 2008 and VS 2010 (just to mention a few), there appears to be a complete refresh cycle in play. The programming paradigm is still in flux, in fact. As we look towards a couple more iterations of HTML, set to fall upon us any day now, the entire programming community is confronted with what will totally alter the logic of programming forever...parallel programming....sure ...
Recruitment and interview process usually becomes complicated and very hard to follow with massive exchange of emails, bulky attachments and several people involved. So it was decided to develop a system that would simplify that process by allowing to find required information at a touch of a key - a web-based workflow-based application to automate the process without any need to install software on the client. The solution also needed to provide automated workflow to route tasks to the relevant ...
On Thursday, a scathingly bad review of Windows Phone 7 (WP7) was published by InfoWorld. I had considered writing a post to refute some of its points, but Paul Thurrott did just that, and did it masterfully. There's little value that I can add to his post, other than to link it and suggest that you read it. Meanwhile, Sunday and Monday, much more fair reviews were posted at Cnet, ZDNet, Gizmodo, Engadget and MobileCrunch. All of these reviews were based on actual hands-on experience with a prototype ...

After moving mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, we started getting reports from Exchange 2010 users that they could no longer manage distribution lists that they owned. Users on Exchange 2003 did not have any issues managing their distribution lists. When an Exchange 2010 user attempted to modify one or more distribution lists they owned, they would get the following error message. Changes to the distribution list membership cannot be saved. You do not have sufficient permission to perform ...
Several Outlook 2003 users with mailboxes on an Exchange 2003 Server reported one or both of the following error messages when they tried to open one or more Exchange 2010 user Calendars. I recently had the privilege of taking part of a conversation about available blog engines with some of our Microsoft Community Leaders. I since got interested in finding out more about available .Net-based extensible blogging engines. Two days ago, I came across a link about Oxite, a codeplex ASP.Net MVC-based mature open source blogging engine (http://oxite.codeplex.com). While the Oxite project is no longer active, its source remains available and downloadable. Additionally, the future holds great ...

If you deploy Microsoft Outlook 2010 during your Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010 migration, please be aware that Microsoft Outlook 2010 does not use the direct booking code that is used in older versions of Outlook and you have resources enabled to use direct booking. To fix the problem, we manually modified the registry to enable direct booking as we only have several users that use a few resources that are enabled for direct booking. For more information, please refer to Microsoft KB Article 982774 ...
After we built a new Exchange 2010 Client Access Server and added the new server to the Client Access Server array, several Outlook users started receiving a Security Alert dialog box with a The name on the security certificate is invalid or does not match the name of the site error message when they logged into Outlook. You must prepare your Windows Active Directory before you install your first Exchange 2010 Server in your organization. It is highly recommended that you prepare and test these changes in your lab environment before you touch your production environment. Here are a few snippets from the ExchangeSetup.log file for your review. ...
Getting Rules from an exchange account configured in Outlook is pretty easy if we understand the hierarchy of the API. After we moved user mailboxes from Exchange 2003 to Exchange 2010, we had several users report issues with Communicator 2007 R2. Issue: There was a problem connecting to Microsoft Office Outlook. The e-mail address used in your default Outlook profile is different from the sign-in address used in Communicator. Change your default Outlook profile to match the sign-in address you are using in Communicator, and then sign out and sign back in to Communicator. Fix: We have a very large Exchange 2003 environment ...

We are currently deploying Exchange 2010 within a large and complex Windows 2003 Active Directory and Exchange 2003 environment.  Over the next several months, I will be posting articles regarding things we’ve run into or things we’ve learned that will help with your deployments.

The Apple iPad is currently getting a lot of buzz because of the app store, the book store and of course iTunes. I had the chance to play with one and this is what I have learned about the device. Let’s get this out of the way first, the iPad is awesome. It is the device for media consumption and casual web browsing. But how does it measure up to those of us with .NET on our brains all days. Let’s find out… Main Screen – you can customize everything on this page. I guess I should replace that image ...
On the 26th of May 2010 , I made a presentation to the .NET user group meeting (thanks to Malisa Ncube for organizing this event every month … ). If you missed my presentation , we talked about why we should all be building services … better still using the .NET framework. This blog post is an introduction to services , why you would want to build services and how you can build services using the .NET framework. What is a service? OASIS defines service as "a mechanism to enable access to one or more ...
After years of one night community and volunteering tasks; and even running cool events like ]inbetween[ weekend, I finally get to go to the actual event! And this time it’s not in Orlando – it’s in New Orleans - which is also exciting! I will be attending many Windows Phone 7 sessions. And will hover over the Windows Phone booths. I am also extremely excited about this short exchange I had on twitter with the brand new Windows Phone Partner Community account: @wppartner #WindwosPhone 7 Enterprise ...
Today while moving mailboxes between Exchange 2003 and Exchange 2010, I hit an issue with a couple of mailboxes. These mailboxes all popped access denied errors or more exactly: Insufficient Access Rights to perform the operation. The cause was similar to the mail flow issue in that inheritable permissions were not turned on for the user object in Active Directory. This also presented it’s own unique problem in that since the initial move request failed because of permissions, it had to be cleared ...
Last year, I wrote Steve Ballmer an email, and he was kind enough to write me back. The email contained a scan of a column I wrote praising Microsoft’s BI strategy. His reply contained three simple words: “Super nice thanks.” Well, now I’d like to write to Steve again, in an open letter format, and this time the love may be a bit tougher. But I’m still super earnest. The past two days have been eventful ones for Microsoft: The company announced the departure of company veterans Robbie Bach and J ...

Yesterday, Microsoft held its flagship launch event for Office 2010 in Manhattan. Today, the Redmond software company is holding a local launch event for Visual Studio (VS) 2010, in Brooklyn. How come information workers get the 212 treatment and developers are relegated to 718? Well, here’s the thing: the Brooklyn Marriott is actually a great place for an event, but you need some intimate knowledge of New York City to know that. NBC’s Studio 8H, where the Office launch was held yesterday (and from ...
I’m going to write my history with Agile here. That way, in future posts, I can refer back to it, instead of typing it out in the post that contains information you may actually want to read. Note that I’m actually a pretty senior developer, and do lots of technical interviews. I’m an Agile fan because of the difference it makes in peoples lives and the improvement in quality it brings, and I’ll sacrifice my technological advance to help teams. Management History I started management pretty early ...
Office 2010 has released to manufacturing. The bits have left the (product team’s) building. Will you upgrade? This version of Office is officially numbered 14, a designation that correlates with the various releases, through the years, of Microsoft Word. There were six major versions of Word for DOS, during whose release cycles came three 16-bit Windows versions. Then, starting with Word 95 and counting through Word 2007, there have been six more versions – all for the 32-bit Windows platform. Skip ...

I really need to shed a few pounds ...
