Every once in a while you find something that is just amazing and you sit back and think whow!

I’ve kind of adopted the position of mobility guru at my place so I get to meet all the people coming into our organisation to sell us stuff, which is actually more a pain in the neck most of the time and not that many free lunches, in fact precious few especially as our company has a policy to not except gifts over the value of £1.

Anyway, today it was Brand Communications turn and there product blow me away!

Put very simple their product, Apollo which is an 800k install, sits on a device, a device being any type of Windows PDA or Windows laptop and pretends to be a NIC, but the traffic is sent over IP and encrypted, it basically makes the device believe it is directly connected to the network and takes over the communication from IP stack below. Apollo can switch between Wifi, to GPRS so quickly that you can be using Skype on a phone call and you won’t notice the change.

With Apollo the communication channel is always open and doesn’t noticeably take much more of the battery of a PDA.

Now the cool thing for a laptop is that Apollo has been design to work with Citrix. For example you can login into your Citrix connection over GPRS, but when the GPRS connection is dropped, Apollo will hold open the ICA session thus stopping Citrix from killing the session. Once contact has been re-established Apollo will match the ICA session on the device with the session it has been keeping open back at base.

So if these guys are so good, how come we haven’t heard much about them in the mobile space? Simple, they don’t partner up and they let people get to hear about them by word of mouth, so I’m giving them a helping hand!

Do they have any customers that I might know? Well actually yes, the MOD, Fire-Service, Police and most Utilities all use Apollo, because scaling to thousands of devices and being mission critical is not a problem.

Hey Microsoft you need to give these guys some serious kudos ... because they pretty much do it all on Windows kit!

If you think Brand's product is good, you ought to take a look at the market leader NetMotion Mobility. We tried it for 30 days against Brand and other products and it blew them all out of the water for ease of use and performance.
